When you taste any substance with astringent taste,such as plantain,unripe banana,it dries up the saliva causing choking like feeling in the throat .
- Decreases kapha and pittha
- Increases vatha dosha
- Qualities are rooksha,sheetha and laghu
- as it is calming and healing we use this taste mostly to prepare medicines in ayurveda
- SELF prescriction is restricted as excess use of this taste can cause constipation
- dries up moisture
- relieves excess salivation
- causes dryness in oral cavity and throat
- worsens chest pain
- causes stoppage of excess blood 🩸 flow in the body so useful in bleeding disorders
- decreases urine production and flow
Examples of astringent taste substances
- Unripe bananas ,pomegranate ,chick peas,beans,okra,ssprouts and the herbs turmeric,lotus seed,arjuna.It is cooling ,heavy and drying in nature and produces a dry
- choking ,sensation in the throat
- taken in moderation,astringent taste calms pitha and kapha but excites vata.It helps in the healing of ulcers and promote clotting
- EXCESS use may cause dryness,in oral cavity ,difficulty in speech , and constipation as well as abdominal distention,heart spasms and stagnation of circulation .
