How to know hair follicles are active or not?

Many men during online consultation used to ask me

" How will I know, if my hair follicle is active or not? "

Here are a few ways 👇

  • Observe Hair Growth: If you see fine, short hair (vellus hair) or longer, thicker hair (terminal hair) in the area, follicles are active. However, if the area is smooth and shiny without any hair growth, the follicles may be inactive.

  • Examine Scalp Health: A healthy scalp, with adequate hydration and minimal flakiness, is more likely to support active follicles. Redness, inflammation, or excessive dryness can indicate issues affecting follicle activity.

  • Check for Signs of Miniaturization: When follicles are active but weakened, they may produce thinner, shorter hairs. This process, known as follicular miniaturization, is often a sign of conditions like androgenic alopecia.

  • Pull Test: Gently tug on a small section of hair. If more than a few strands come out, this may suggest shedding due to issues affecting follicle health, but it doesn’t necessarily mean follicles are inactive

  • Dermatological Examination: A dermatologist can perform a trichoscopy, using magnification tools to examine hair follicles, or may suggest a scalp biopsy to confirm follicle activity.

  • Blood Flow: Active follicles typically have good blood circulation, so you can try scalp massage or look for signs of warmth in the scalp area to help indicate this.

  • These are some of the few ways to check  whether your hair follicle is active or not 🙂
