Understanding the causes of leg cramps

From Dehydration to Footwear: Understanding the Causes of Leg Cramps" Leg cramps are a common issue, especially for those over the age of 40.  These sudden, painful muscle contractions typically affect the calves and feet, but they can also involve the thighs.  Often occurring at night, leg cramps can be so intense that they disrupt sleep and leave the muscles feeling sore or tight.  These cramps may last a few minutes but, in some cases, can persist through the night, leading to discomfort and restlessness.  Let’s explore the reasons behind leg cramps and how to manage them better. Why Do Leg Cramps Occur? 1. Lack of Hydration Staying well-hydrated is essential for maintaining muscle health.  Dehydration can lead to an imbalance in the body’s electrolytes, such as potassium, calcium, and magnesium, which are crucial for muscle function.  When these minerals are out of balance, muscles may involuntarily contract, causing cramps.  Drinking adequat...

How to know hair follicles are active or not?

Many men during online consultation used to ask me  " How will I know, if my hair follicle is active or not? " Here are a few ways 👇 Observe Hair Growth: If you see fine, short hair (vellus hair) or longer, thicker hair (terminal hair) in the area, follicles are active. However, if the area is smooth and shiny without any hair growth, the follicles may be inactive. Examine Scalp Health: A healthy scalp, with adequate hydration and minimal flakiness, is more likely to support active follicles. Redness, inflammation, or excessive dryness can indicate issues affecting follicle activity. Check for Signs of Miniaturization: When follicles are active but weakened, they may produce thinner, shorter hairs. This process, known as follicular miniaturization, is often a sign of conditions like androgenic alopecia. Pull Test: Gently tug on a small section of hair. If more than a few strands come out, this may suggest shedding due to issues affecting follicle health, but it doesn’t ...

Why Bread for Breakfast Could Be Sabotaging Your Health"🙄 A patient came to me five years ago complaining of back pain after his wife had been away for five days. He had been surviving on plain bread three times a day due to his desk job. As a doctor, I could easily see that his poor food choices had contributed to his discomfort." Bread, particularly refined white bread, can negatively impact digestion, energy levels, and overall health when consumed regularly, especially in the morning when the body needs nourishing and easily digestible foods to fuel the day. From an Ayurvedic standpoint, breakfast should support agni (digestive fire), which is not yet fully active in the morning after a night of rest. Consuming bread, especially with butter or jam, can overload the digestive system, as it is heavy and difficult to digest. This can lead to the formation of ama (toxins), which Ayurveda identifies as the root cause of many diseases. Refined bread, in particular, i...
